Re-imagining Internships Through the Lens of Social Justice and Pathways Forward
Tuesday March 14, 2023, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speakers: Dr. Louis Berends, Monica Francioso
Social justice and employability are often considered two distinct aims in global education—equally important, but on opposite ends of the pedagogical spectrum. This session examines how social justice and employability can be simultaneously pursued through rethinking internship programs domestically and abroad using a lens of interdependence and connections locally and globally.

The Entrepreneur Chronicles – Building Resilience Across Your Career in Education Abroad and Beyond
Wednesday March 15, 2023, 9 a.m. - 10 a.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speaker: Stacy McKay Benander
We’ve heard about how Jeff Bezos famously launched Amazon from his garage, or how Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook as a way for Harvard students to meet one another. But how do we as education abroad advocates become creative and successful entrepreneurs in our own domains? When can we find the time to come up with new solutions to big problems – when we find ourselves mired in daily tasks that can easily take over? And how can we pave a path of entrepreneurship in our careers, when we might not know where to start or how it is even possible?

In-person

The State of Education Abroad: The Practice and the Profession
Thursday, March 23, 2023, 8:45 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speaker: Dr. Lou Berends
Take a look inside the most comprehensive State of the Field survey ever conducted by The Forum on Education Abroad. Drawing on institutional practice and job benchmarking data from colleagues across our field, this session will identify current trends and opportunities for the future of our professional practice

Imagining Another World: Centering Academics in Values-Based Change
Thursday March 23, 2023, 10:45 a.m. - 12 p.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speaker: Stina M. Dufour
Learn how academic professionals in institutions and program provider contexts have used the pandemic as a portal between old and new, to imagine a new world of study abroad (referencing Arundhati Roy’s piece “The Pandemic is a Portal). Join a chat on how three years of iterative changes to syllabi, policies, and procedures leave outdated ideas behind and center academic rigor informed by values of DEI.

Disruptive Leadership and the Evolution of Belonging
Thursday March 23, 2023, 3:45 p.m. - 5 p.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speaker: Darin Smith-Gaddis
This session will take a non-traditional approach to a panel by creating an innovative, interactive space where panelists and participants will share their views on values, belonging, and approaches to informed action through storytelling in global education.

“Wear Comfortable Shoes:” Addressing Ableism in International Education
Thursday March 23, 2023, 3:45 p.m. – 5 p.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speaker: Dr. Martha Johnson
Education abroad has historically operated on ableist assumptions. In this session, three long term professionals will share their experience navigating the field with hidden disabilities and the challenges they have faced. From conference and site visit design to facilities and campus expectations, we will discuss how to better support and empower professionals, educators, and ultimately students.

“Now, I Won’t Give Up!”: Viewing First-Generation Programs Through a Student Development Lens
Friday March 24, 2023, 8:45 a.m. – 10 a.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speakers: Stina M. Dufour, Mary Alice Soriero
How do administrators and faculty define student success in the study abroad context? What assumptions do we make about who will be successful and why? Join us to explore how a successful partnership between a public institution and a U.S.-based program provider has since 2014 created the conditions for first-generation students to study abroad and to succeed upon return to their home campus.

Marketing Via a DEI Lens: A Pragmatic Application of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Friday March 24, 2023, 1:45 p.m. – 3 p.m. PST
CEA CAPA Speaker: Randeep Kullar
There are traditional aspects of marketing to consider when promoting study abroad programs to undergraduate students, parents, faculty, advisors, and institutional staff. In addition to a list of traditional marketing considerations, you also need to look at each piece you develop through a DEI lens. Approach each piece by thinking about the diversity within your audiences.
