Institute des Cultures d'Islam
This Institute des Cultures d'Islam I was required to attend in order to accompany the readings in one of my courses. Now I don't think I would have ever thought to go to a museum like this on my own but I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting. The amazing ways the Arabic alphabet was incorporated into the pieces opened my eyes to a new world of art. After visiting this museum I noticed the influence of Islam in street art all throughout Paris. And they have an amazing Moroccan cafe.
Musee Cognacq Jay
If you're a 17th and 18th century fan, then the Musee Cognacq Jay is your version of heaven. Stepping into this museum is like taking a time machine back into the 1800's, as it is designed to mimic a high class 17th-18th century home. Filled with paintings, busts, snuff boxes, and furniture, the gaudy pieces bring so much life to history.
The classic Parisian tourist attraction. I think I've been to the Louvre about five times now and I STILL have not seen it all. It's the most massive art museum in Paris, hosting the underwhelming yet enchanting portrait of the Mona Lisa and a variety of artifacts including Ancient Egyptian mummies. The museum also hosts workshops with today's contemporary artists.
Street Art in the 10th Arrondissement
Rue Oberkampf, Paris is home to extraordinary street art. One of my favorite things about this kind of art is the fact that it is ever changing. The community is encouraged to contribute and it makes for lovely scenery on your Sunday afternoon walks through Paris.
My favorite museum of all has to be the Musee D'Orsay. I am a huge fan of Degas ballerinas, and they hosted a temporary exhibit this past February featuring the behind-the-scenes view of the work that went into creating his art. In addition, if you are a fan of romantic impressionist paintings then this is the place for you.
Studying Abroad opens so many doors and opens your mind to the importance, elegance and diversity of art our world has to offer.
