Internships in London

University of Westminster has a class in which they set you up with an internship abroad. You work 15 hours per week for 12 weeks, it's a fantastic opportunity, and I definitely recommend it. One setback, however, is that you have a 15-hour-a-week commitment atop your classes (that take up about 12 hours per week) and cannot travel as much as you would probably like to. Don’t worry: London has plenty to do on the weekends. You can check out my other blogs and Buzzfeed for suggestions.

My experience with the internship has not been as rewarding in terms of a ‘good job’ as I would have wished: My boss is an interesting person to say the least. Fortunately, I get plenty of hands-on experience with media management, which is what I am pursuing in the future, and the experience dealing with a manager from a different culture.

Pros of Working Abroad:

  • Resume booster
  • Experience working in a foreign country
  • Networking
  • Iweta, the coordinator, will set you up with internship choices that fit your major
  • An internship is basically handed to you
  • Working in one of the most beautiful places in the world
  • Making and drinking a proper cup of tea

Cons of Working Abroad:

  • Less travel time
  • Sometimes you deal with an interesting characters, allow me to elaborate (could also go int the "Pro" section):

I have been launching the social media platforms, building the website and branding for a new medical clinic here on London’s premier healthcare clinic area: Harley Street. Working for a doctor has proved very difficult due to differences in motivation, working style, cultures, and personality.  For instance, her attention to detail is a bit too extensive from a social media management position.  But please do not take the disadvantages I have faced as an example of what you will be facing. Even though I have not gotten the experience that I expected, I got experience with things that I will no doubt face in the future, and I would not change that.

Another piece of advice I have for you is that if you are here for the year, do the internship in the second semester. The first semester you will want to get acclimated and explore. Best of luck!

Our office is on Harley Street with high, ornate ceilings

And the front lobby is one of the most beautiful
