The CEA Global Campus in Rome extends its admiration and congratulations to two of the eight university recipients of Senator Paul Simon Awards for Campus Internationalization: Providence College and the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University. The Global Campus in Rome partners with both institutions to assist in providing programs in Rome, Italy for PC and CSB/SJU students.

Named for the late Senator Paul Simon, a strong advocate for international education, these awards allow NAFSA: Association of International Educators to recognize institutions in two areas: Comprehensive Internationalization and Internationalization through a Specific Program.

The Comprehensive Award, given to The College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University and four other institutions, acknowledges overall excellence in internationalization efforts as evidenced in practices, structures, philosophies, and policies. The CSB/SJU website explains that “CSB and SJU internationalization initiatives are focused in three areas: developing a globally competent faculty, a curriculum which is embedded with intercultural and global content and students who graduate prepared for life in an interconnected and globally competitive world.”

The Spotlight Award is presented to institutions for a specific innovative program or initiative that contributes to comprehensive internationalization.  Providence College was one of three institutions selected as a recipient for its Global Studies Program, described by  PC as “an innovative educational experience that focuses on internationalization. Specifically, the global studies major invites students to learn about globalization from the dual perspective of the theory and praxis of global citizenship in local and international communities.”

Recipients of the 2012 Senator Paul Simon Award will be recognized at a special ceremony in Washington, DC, in November 2012, and will be profiled in the 2012 edition of Internationalizing the Campus: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities, a NAFSA report on successful models of comprehensive internationalization.

Auguri to the staff of CSB/SJU’s Center for Global Education and PC’s Center for International Studies!  We at CEA Rome look forward to assisting in continued successful efforts in international education!
