Here’s How I Spent a Weekend While Studying Abroad in Barcelona
Although part of studying abroad can include traveling, an even bigger part is to recognize the beauty around you, in your host city. When I first arrived in Barcelona, and met my roommates, I was talking about traveling with them, and they seemed to already have a trip planned for each weekend! I started to become anxious, as I did not have this planned. I felt as if I should have been booking ten trips right then and there.
I have so far been on two different weekend trips, and appreciated them both so much, but this past weekend I stayed home, and I really appreciated doing so.

After riding ten metro stops, I sat at a local cafe for a school assignment, and experienced an authentic Barcelona cafe experience.

Walked far enough beyond the Gothic Quarter, and had a breathtaking sight waiting for me.
As I was here in Barcelona, I wandered all over the place with my friends. I had a friend from home in Connecticut visit me, so it was fun to play tour guide and show her what I have been up to. I also took her to significant spots, and it challenged my knowledge of the city and the history of Barcelona as well!

My hometown friend captured a photo of me showing them the iconic Sagrada Familia.

My roommate and I went to a cooking class, and learned about the history of tapas and how to make them!
I also feel that on weekends when I travel, I come back home and am extremely exhausted. I have less ambition and motivation to go to class, and to finish my assignments. When I stay in Barcelona, I feel well rested and ready for the next week to come.

Witnessed locals selling their artwork in the Gothic Quarter.

Street performers, moments before they pulled me into their act, and did a front flip over me!
I also feel great when I cover more land in Barcelona. I did choose this city to study abroad in, and I want to be able to have knowledge and direction on it.

Indulging in some delicious tapas before the night begins.
I think this is important so that when more people come to visit me, or when I leave the city, I can come back later in life and enjoy it, and tell people all about it with confidence. I believe it is also really important not to be pulled into that sort of “peer pressure” of, "Everyone's traveling, so I have to too,” or, “Everyone is going to Switzerland this weekend, so should I,” because in reality if that's not something that you really want to do, it's better to not let it get to you, and to enjoy your host city!
