After submitting my resume, experience, and interests, I was quickly matched with an organization and scheduled for an interview. Their support made entering an international workplace feel seamless, giving me the confidence to succeed in a new environment.  

When I arrived in Prague and began working, I felt supported by staff however I needed it. Simultaneously, all internship students were enrolled in an internship course designed to build upon our work experiences and apply them to future opportunities. I was also able to make friends with likeminded, driven individuals who were also ready to jump headfirst into their own international organizations.

New Industry, New Experience, New Friends 

As a marketing major, this internship gave me the chance to step outside my comfort zone and gain experience in a completely new industry. I worked at GoodCall, a Czech-based HR recruitment and employer branding company, where I supported projects in SEO, market research, and brand design. Coming in with no background in HR pushed me to be proactive, ask questions, and learn quickly: skills that go far beyond textbook marketing knowledge. 

This experience broadened my understanding of how different business functions work together and showed me how to apply my existing marketing skills in a new context. More importantly, it helped me build essential soft skills like adaptability, problem-solving, and cross-team communication: qualities that will serve me in any fast-paced, global workplace. 

Along the way, I also experienced genuine cultural immersion. My coworkers welcomed me from day one, helping me understand Czech work culture and sharing recommendations for food, travel, and local events. Those relationships became one of the most meaningful parts of my internship, and they’re a huge reason Prague now feels like a second home. 

Stepping into a role outside my major proved to me that professional growth often comes from embracing uncertainty. It gave me confidence, a global perspective, and a stronger foundation for whatever career path I pursue next.

Challenges of Interning Abroad 

While the rewards were immense, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges of a study + internship abroad program. Unlike some of my peers who only studied abroad, my schedule was packed with 20 internship hours each week, 12 credit hours, and occasional weekend travel. This meant less free time for bonding with my roommates or exploring my home city, but it also taught me time management and resilience. 

Another reality of interning abroad is that internships are unpaid due to visa requirements, so budgeting is essential. At work, language barriers sometimes made me feel out of place, especially during lunch conversations in Czech. Still, my coworkers were always accommodating, and these moments ultimately pushed me to grow in patience and adaptability.
