Tips for Adjusting to a New City
Welcome to Barcelona!
For me, during the first couple of weeks in Barcelona, everything simply felt so NEW! From adjusting to the time difference to all the emotions that came with moving abroad, I found it so helpful to get outside and get to know my new city. Don’t be afraid to try new foods, new coffee shops, and just be open and challenge yourself to step outside of the familiar! Take in all the architecture and things that make your city unique; I absolutely loved seeing Casa Batlló.
Good news, Barcelona has iced coffee here!
The beauty of Barcelona in the evening.
Go for a walk, you’ll be amazed at what you will see!
My Top Tips
One tip I have is to try your best in speaking the native language when getting groceries or at a restaurant and cafe, and if it feels challenging, don’t give up! I found when I tried speaking in Spanish here, the locals appreciated my effort, and I was able to connect with them more.
Metro card holder!
Stopping by the Arc de Triomf.
The second tip I have is to use public transportation! Barcelona has a wonderful program with
T-mobilitat. For three months, people under 30 can purchase the T-jove pass which allows for unlimited use of the metro, bus, train, and tram across the entire Barcelona area! I have absolutely loved using my pass and feel it gives me the ability to easily explore Barcelona. I will say though, the city is very walkable, so when the weather is nice you can always opt to walk as well!
Sweet treat run, but make it Barcelona!
Sending love from Sagrada Familia.
In awe of my new city!
One other small thing that has been really helpful in adjusting to and making this place feel more like home is bringing some type of photo or decor to add to your room or place you're staying. I stopped by a local photo booth and have now used those photo strips as decoration in my apartment!
Make your house a home with some decor.
Using jetlag as an excuse to get a latte everyday!
The little daily moments really do make your experience so special. Don’t forget to breathe, take it all in, and call your friends and family back home in the small time when you both are awake.
