Practicing Sustainability While Studying Abroad in Florence

Studying abroad has given me the opportunity to experience new cultures, meet diverse people, and grow both academically and personally. But with all of these great opportunities, there also comes responsibility, especially when it comes to climate change.

During my time studying abroad, I’ve become more mindful of how my actions in another country contribute to global emissions. That awareness has shaped not only my habits, but my long-term commitment to sustainable living.

Travel

When studying abroad, students often travel frequently to explore different countries and cities, which can significantly contribute to climate change. These forms of transportation release large amounts of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, which trap heat in the atmosphere and lead to rising global temperatures. In addition, increased tourism can strain local resources, create more waste, and put pressure on the environment. While studying abroad is a valuable experience, it also comes with a responsibility to consider its environmental impact. Personally, I committed to these values during my semester in Florence. I avoided unnecessary flights and instead chose trains to explore nearby regions of Italy. Not only did this reduce my carbon footprint, but it also allowed me to appreciate the landscape and culture in a slower, more intentional way.

Food

When it came to food, I tried to stick with local producers. Rather than relying on imported food or packaged snacks, I explored open-air markets, tried regional dishes, and cooked whole foods as much as possible. This approach felt more authentic, environmentally responsible, and it was also more affordable.

Lifestyle Shifts

I also made small lifestyle shifts to reduce waste. I carried a reusable water bottle, tote bag, and had my own cutlery when I wanted to eat outside. These minor changes eliminated hundreds of single-use items and made me feel more connected to my values. The more I practiced sustainability, the more second nature it became.

Going forward, I will continue to advocate for sustainability in every environment I’m part of. Whether through school, travel, or my daily life, I want to use my voice and creativity to promote climate-conscious choices. Studying abroad showed me how small shifts in mindset and habit can ripple into real impact. Sustainability can be integrated into any lifestyle, even one full of adventure, spontaneity, and exploration.
