My Outdoor Adventures While Studying Abroad in Alicante, Spain
After living in Spain for two months, I have learned a lot about Spanish culture and traditions. I have tried new foods such as paella and patatas bravas and have celebrated holidays such as carnivals and Fallas in Valencia. However, my favorite part about Spanish culture has been the desire to spend time outdoors.

The city of Alicante is known for its mild temperatures and sunny days. Alicante is the city with the second most sunny days in Europe, behind Malaga. Due to its great weather, most residents spend much of their time outdoors. Walking around the University of Alicante’s campus, you will see students sitting in the amphitheater, eating at the outside dining hall tables, and lying in the grass fields. Around town, many locals spend their time outside in parks or at the beach.

The sunny days have allowed me multiple opportunities to explore the city. La Castillo de Santa Bárbara has various hikes that offer a great city view, especially at sunset. I also found a few hikes around the city that provide a fantastic view of the Castillo.

I spent much of my time hiking at Clemson (my home university in the U.S.), so it’s nice to incorporate that hobby into this experience. It’s a friendly reminder of home, even halfway across the world.

Another outdoor activity I enjoyed doing while studying abroad in Alicante is going to the beach. After class on sunny days, my friends and I pass around the soccer ball here. We also enjoy going to the local parks for walks or just sitting and talking.

Most activities in Spain involve spending time outdoors and being active. This is a nice pace change from the United States lifestyle I am used to. Spending time outdoors not only improves our well-being mentally but also physically, overall improving our lives.
