Reflecting on My Time in the French Riviera

December 20, 2018

As this semester comes to a close, we're all beginning to reflect on our experiences, what we wish we had done more of, and most importantly, the memories we are thankful for.

Group in St paul de VenceThe last four months have been nothing short of amazing, exciting, stressful at times, and hilarious -- among many other things. I was lucky enough to make friendships that I know will stay with me long after we all leave, and I've taken enough photos and videos to last my memories a lifetime. The few times of stress and miscommunication on my way here were all made worth it the second I stepped off of that plane at the Nice Airport on September 1. That same day, when I walked in to my new home for the next four months, I knew in my heart that it would be one of the best decisions I ever made thus far in my 23 years.

Apple Orchard FranceI would say that the biggest lesson I have learned is to not take your time for granted; if you think four months will go by fast in your everyday life, try coming to a beautiful, historic, exciting country, and then tell me. On top of that, try meeting some of your new best friends, experiencing things with them that only the 21 of you will truly remember in your own way forever. Days go by faster when spent with the people who fill those days with important memories, and as I sit here typing this, almost fully packed, leaving in four days, I wish that I had made even more amazing memories.

CEA Group PictureI wish that I had learned to more fluently speak French and taken more time to get to know our neighbors. To the sweet old man and woman who lived above us, if you ever find yourself reading this, thank you for taking care of our shared property, letting us pet your cat, and saying "Bonjour" with a smile every time.

This has been such a fulfilling and humbling experience, and I can’t wait to share it all with my family and friends once I get home. I know that I will be back to the French Riviera one day -- that you can count on!
