Local Prague

I am writing this blog post as I sit in the Grand Cafe Orient, nestled outside Old Town Square in the Czech Museum of Cubism. This cafe, elevated on the first floor, is flooded with natural light and exudes an atmosphere of old elegance. It is these kind of places - historic and hidden - that make Prague so magical.

Shortly after arriving in Prague, I decided that I wanted to discover and experience Prague more than just the tourist traps. I have found some amazing spots, restaurants and cafes both near and far from my apartment. Thanks to some great blogs (Taste of Prague) and recommendations from friends who had previously studied in Prague, I have stumbled upon places that I would have never found on my own. I really wanted an authentic experience in Prague and these places have ensured that for me.

Prior to arriving in Prague, I really didn't know much about the city. Friends and family had told me that the city was really unlike anywhere else in the world and that it was comparable to a fairy tale. It is hard to understand until you are actually in the city. While it may sound silly to say I'm living in a fairy tale, it really is quite true. The city is comprised of centuries old architecture and narrow cobble stone streets that can transport you back in time. It is no wonder that Walt Disney was so inspired by the Tyn Church for the famous Cinderella Castle in Disney World.

Now that it is Spring, it feels as if Prague locals have come out of hiding. The farmers markets are flooded on Saturdays and filled with the smells of tulips, freshly baked bread and homemade pastries. The flowers are blooming, paddle boats are all over the Vltava River and the weather is just nice enough for joggers to leave the gym. It is a nice change and hopefully my winter coat is hung up until next year.

It is hard to believe that I only have one more month in Prague. These past few months have flown by and I can't believe it is almost time to pack up my bags and go home. Hopefully I can use the next four weeks to check off the last few items on my bucket list!
