About the Program
Improve your spoken and written Spanish while delving into intriguing subjects like art, economics, history, literature, media, music, political science, sociology, and more. During the semester, elective course options increase in proportion to your language level. At the beginning to intermediate level, elective courses are all taught in English, while at the high-intermediate level and above, elective courses are all taught in Spanish. Summer courses are designed for students at all levels of Spanish. You'll enjoy choosing from a robust set of courses, taught in English and Spanish that build upon all that Granada has to offer, from history to art to culture. In addition, you can complete a ACTFL Official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) at the CEA CAPA office to prove your language ability, whether it be for future employers or to become a foreign language teacher.

University of Granada
The University of Granada (UGR) was established in 1531; over the last five centuries, it’s grown into one of Spain’s largest universities. Its influence as a center of social and cultural importance continues to increase, making UGR a major intellectual focal point in the region. With a student population of 80,000, the university offers a complete range of courses and a variety of cultural, artistic, and sport activities.
You’ll take classes at UGR’s Modern Language Center, Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM), established in 1992. It’s centrally located in the Realejo quarter, the former Jewish neighborhood, in the ancient Palace of Santa Cruz (16th century) and a charming modern palace called Huerta de los Ángeles. The Centro offers courses for international students and foreign language courses for Spaniards, with a total population of about 7,500 students.
UGR hosts students from all over Spain and the world. Social and cultural activities sponsored by the university foster interaction between international and Spanish students.
Credit Transfer Information
CEA CAPA credit hour recommendations are based on the following conversion: 15 contact hours equals 1 U.S. credit. Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university. Please consult with an academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Students receive a transcript from the University of Granada upon successful completion of the program. Transcript reflects contact hours.

Grading
Grade conversions from CEA CAPA partner institutions abroad to a US grading scale are determined in consultation with our School of Record and benchmarked with other peer institutions in the field.
Please note that CEA CAPA can only recommend grade conversions to students’ home institutions—it is ultimately at the discretion of the home institution to convert grades from abroad to students’ academic records.

Classroom and Information
- International faculty teach language courses and electives at the CLM.
- Homework assignments, midterms, and final exams will be administered.
- Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor. CLM requires a minimum 80% attendance.
- Teaching styles in Spain may differ from those in the U.S. Be prepared to adapt to UGR’s classroom structures and coursework expectations.
- Class size ranges from 10 to 15 students for language courses and 10 to 40 students for electives.
- You’ll attend class with international students from the U.S., Europe, Canada, and other parts of the world. Students at the high-advanced level of Spanish and above may enroll in up to two courses with Spaniards in other UGR schools.

Program Structure & Courses
Students at an advanced Spanish level or lower enroll in 2 Spanish language courses and 2-3 elective courses (taught in English and/or Spanish); students above advanced level enroll in 1 Spanish language course and 3-4 elective courses (taught in Spanish). Students at a superior proficiency level may enroll 1 integrated elective course with Spaniards.
Courses meet for a total of 45 contact hours/12-16 credits. Integrated courses meet for 60 contact hours/4 semester credits. You may earn 12-16 credits (up to 240 contact hours); if you choose the Early Start option, you may earn 16-21 credits (up to 320 contact hours).
Classes meet on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday; during the intensive language portion of the program, classes meet Monday-Friday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled on Fridays.
Early Start: The Early Start course runs for 4 weeks/80 contacts hours in Fall and 3 weeks/60 contact hours in Spring; it’s designed to help you adjust to the university setting and prepare you for your courses. If you participate in the Early Start course you may earn an additional 4-5 semester credits (up to 80 contact hours).

It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. Your housing abroad is more than a place to sleep, it's a place to feel at home.
Health & Safety
Health and safety are a top priority when selecting and reviewing program housing. When evaluating housing, CEA CAPA considers several factors including the surrounding location, commute time to academic or internship settings, as well as the condition of the building exterior and interior, common areas, the individual housing unit, and other living spaces. CEA CAPA works to ensure that program housing meets established minimum health and safety guidelines and aligns with best practices in the field.

Regular cleaning of communal areas for programs longer than 4 weeks.
Wi-Fi
Reliable internet access is included in every housing option we offer.
Students Per Bedroom
Typically 1–2 students per bedroom, with a maximum of 3 per room.
Commute Time
Housing is located within 60 minutes of campus by foot or transportation.
Temperature Control
Cooling and heating appliances are provided (AC not always included).
Kitchen Access
A shared space with basic utensils, refrigerator, freezer, and a stove, oven, or microwave.
Laundry
Access to laundry is guaranteed onsite or within walking distance. Drying racks included.
Study Space
A desk in your room or a table in a common area.
Storage Space
Practical, modest storage space for personal belongings.
Linens
Pillows, blankets and sheets.

Homestay
Engage in the culture and daily lives of locals when you live in a Spanish homestay. Each homestay has been chosen to ensure the best living arrangements for each student. You will live within walking distance of the school and share a bedroom with one other student. The homestay includes 3 meals per day, Monday-Sunday, and a weekly laundry and cleaning service. This option is ideal for students eager to fully delve into culture, experiencing local customs, traditions, and cuisine.

To elevate your study abroad experience, private homestay rooms are available for a supplemental fee. Supplemental fees may vary depending on the included amenities as well as the length of the program. The exact amount will be provided on the housing application form.
Residencia Private Room
Experience modern living in a residence designed for balance. You’ll enjoy a private single room within a three-bedroom suite, sharing two bathrooms and a small kitchenette with two other students. This option includes no meal plan, giving you total independence to cook in the suite or use the building’s fully equipped common kitchen. Stay cool with in room air conditioning and enjoy premium perks like a gym, study rooms, and a seasonal pool (summer only). With excellent public transport links nearby, you have the freedom to explore all of Granada while maintaining a comfortable, self-sufficient home base.

Excursions
Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.
