About the Program

Program Description

Explore Latin American culture while improving your Spanish language skills! Whether you’re a beginning Spanish speaker, speak at an advanced proficiency level, or are somewhere in between, you’ll take language courses that’ll boost your fluency. During the semester, courses taught in Spanish provide you with insight into Latin American culture, history, and society. Fieldwork opportunities support lessons learned in class, while helping you connect with the local community and practice your Spanish language skills. (This program's courses in Spanish do not combine with courses in English from the Business program).

Program Structure

Choose a 4-week program in June or July. You'll enroll in 2 language courses appropriate to your Spanish level. Courses meet for 44-76 contact hours/3-5 credits. You may choose to enroll in two consecutive 4-week sessions. You may earn a total of 8 credits (up to 120 contact hours) per session.

Classes meet Monday-Friday; active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.

You'll take a language placement test and register for courses after you arrive in Viña del Mar. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Chile. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Where You'll Study

The University of Viña del Mar welcomes students from across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, many of whom are drawn to the school’s renowned Spanish Center.  Since 2008 the UVM has been certified to provide the Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) which is organized by the Cervantes Institute of Spain together with the Universidad de Salamanca. Take integrated courses with local and other international students, taught in your choice of English and Spanish, on the university’s two centrally located campuses.

Where You'll Stay

When in Viña del Mar, live as the locals do! Choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA Housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.
