About the Program
Improve your Spanish proficiency in a short period of time at the University of Granada’s esteemed Centro de Lenguas Modernas. Courses are available for all levels of language learners in this summer program. You may choose to add an optional elective course, taught in Spanish, with a focus on Spanish culture, geography, history, or literature of Spain. Language courses focus on listening comprehension, oral expression, grammar, and written expression/comprehension and are designed for your specific level of Spanish proficiency. Explore student life in Granada as you immerse into Spanish culture and hone your language skills. In addition, you can complete a ACTFL Official Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) at the CEA CAPA office to prove your language ability, whether it be for future employers or to become a foreign language teacher.

University of Granada
The University of Granada (UGR) was established in 1531; over the last five centuries, it’s grown into one of Spain’s largest universities. Its influence as a center of social and cultural importance continues to increase, making UGR a major intellectual focal point in the region. With a student population of 80,000, the university offers a complete range of courses and a variety of cultural, artistic, and sport activities.
You’ll take classes at UGR’s Modern Language Center, Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM), established in 1992. It’s centrally located in the Realejo quarter, the former Jewish neighborhood, in the ancient Palace of Santa Cruz (16th century) and a charming modern palace called Huerta de los Ángeles. The Centro offers courses for international students and foreign language courses for Spaniards, with a total population of about 7,500 students.
UGR hosts students from all over Spain and the world. Social and cultural activities sponsored by the university foster interaction between international and Spanish students.
Credit Transfer Information
CEA CAPA credit hour recommendations are based on the following conversion: 15 contact hours equals 1 U.S. credit. Credit transfer is ultimately determined by your home university. Please consult with an academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
Transcript Information
Students receive a transcript from the University of Granada upon successful completion of the program. Transcript reflects contact hours.
Accreditation
The University of Granada is recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a degree-granting institution of higher learning.
Grading
Grade conversions from CEA CAPA partner institutions abroad to a US grading scale are determined in consultation with our School of Record and benchmarked with other peer institutions in the field.
Please note that CEA CAPA can only recommend grade conversions to students’ home institutions—it is ultimately at the discretion of the home institution to convert grades from abroad to students’ academic records.

Classroom and Information
- International faculty teach language courses and electives at the CLM.
- Homework assignments, midterms, and final exams will be administered.
- Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor. CLM requires a minimum 80% attendance.
- Teaching styles in Spain may differ from those in the U.S. Be prepared to adapt to UGR’s classroom structures and coursework expectations.
- Class size ranges from 10 to 15 students for language courses and 10 to 40 students for electives.
- You’ll attend class with international students from the U.S., Europe, Canada, and other parts of the world. Students at the high-advanced level of Spanish and above may enroll in up to two courses with Spaniards in other UGR schools.

Program Structure & Courses
Choose a 4-week session in June, July, or both June and July. You'll enroll in a Spanish language course at your level. Language courses meet for 80 contact hours/5 credits. You have the opportunity to enroll in an elective course for an additional fee.
Elective courses meet for 10-23 contact hours/1 credit. You may earn 5-6 credits (up to 103 contact hours) in June or July. If you combine June and July sessions, you may earn up to 10-12 credits (up to 206 contact hours).
Courses meet Monday-Friday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.
Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses. You'll take a language placement exam after you arrive in Granada. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Spain. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

If you wish to live among local student, the Residence Hall is a great option offering the independence of apartment-style accommodations with the services of an international Residence Hall (meal plan, cleaning service, laundry and ironing, Wi-Fi) The Residence Halls provide the typical Spanish Mediterranean diet and may be able to accommodate students' dietary restrictions, such as vegetarians or food allergies, however it is ultimately the responsibility of the student to select the housing option that best accommodates their unique dining needs. Situated in the historical city center which is the main shopping and recreational area, Residence Halls house mostly Spanish students as well as some international and North American students. If you crave a taste of university life abroad and wish to meet Spanish peers, this housing option is a great fit for you.

Excursions
Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.
