About the Program
Take a deep dive into Spanish culture, history, and sociology as you earn credits toward your major or graduation requirements. Engage with local culture and attend class with local and other international students in this flexible program. Designed for students at any Spanish level, you'll choose from a range of elective courses—taught in English or Spanish—while you improve your Spanish skills in an intensive language course. Attend integrated classes at our partner, Pompeu Fabra University (UPF); you may also choose to take a course at the CEA Barcelona Center, where you'll gain insight into the history, literature, and sociology of Spain while earning credits toward your major or graduation requirements. Program Structure
Enroll in 1 UPF language course, 2-3 UPF elective courses, 0-1 CEA elective courses. You also have the option to enroll in up to 2 CEA virtual courses. UPF language courses meet for 90 contact hours/6 credits; UPF and CEA elective courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits. You may also choose to enroll in the Global Career Development Seminar course, which meets for 15 contact hours/1 credit. You may earn a total of 12-16 credits (up to 240 contact hours) for semester and a total of 24-32 credits (up to 480 contact hours) for the academic year program.
UPF language courses meet daily, Monday-Thursday. UPF elective courses may meet 2-3 times per week, Monday-Thursday. Typically, CEA elective classes meet twice per week, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.
CEA virtual courses are taught in English using an online Learning Management System. You are expected to be an active participant in online forums, in addition to completing your regular readings, videos and homework. You can expect a blend of synchronous (live) and asynchronous (at your own pace) learning approaches that provide individual attention and flexibility for your learning style. Engaging in your “own way” gives you an opportunity to showcase your engagement in any topic or assignment while being part of an online global learning community.
Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take an online language placement exam. After you arrive in Barcelona, you'll take a language placement exam at UPF during orientation week. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home university pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Spain. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.Excursions
Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs*. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.
