This module introduces students to both the varieties of modern poetry and the ways in which poetry engages with the world. It focuses principally on poetic works drawn from the last 200 years and is particularly concerned with poetry’s role in examining, interrogating and contributing to discussions about social and political issues. Topics may include: the role of poetry; gender and the body; political voices; poetry and place; sexuality; violence and conflict.
