DESCRIPTION

This module follows on from the structures modules in 3rd year and the students receive additional lectures on moment distribution in addition to the stiffness method, the concepts associated with shear walls and a brief introduction to the finite element method. Students will also be required to carry out a number of laboratory assignments that are used to illustrate the theoretical concepts from the coursework.

Learning Outcomes
1. Derive the generalized stiffness equation for a plane frame.
2. Set-up and apply the stiffness method to analyse plane frames subjected to in-plane forces/moments.
3. Develop solutions for a number of simple plane frames.
4. Carry out a dynamic assessment of simple structures and calculate the natural frequency.
5. Analyse shear walls.
6. Interpret finite element analyses and results
7. Evaluate experimental and computational outcomes in relation to theoretical derivations.
8. Identify experimental error and theoretical approximations.
9. Recognize the importance of experimental verification of theoretical and semi-theoretical formulae.
10. Critically analyse experimental results.
11. Work as a group to produce concise technical reports.
