Design of Sustainable Environmental Systems I University of Galway - Engineering & Computer Science Program Fall 2023 Semester - Galway

In this module, the theory behind the design of waste, water and wastewater treatment systems is discussed. Particular attention is focused on activated sludge and biofilm-based wastewater treatment systems, nutrient removal from wastewaters, biotechnologies for waste treatment, and thermal treatment technologies for waste treatment. Energy efficiency and recovery are discussed as is the engineer?s role to society and the environment when designing and operating such facilities. The module is examined through written exams and project/essay work.

Learning Outcomes
1. Identify potential benefits, threats and deficits to society and the environment associated with wastewater and waste.
2. Understand and identify recent relevant legislation
3. Formulate solutions for any benefits, threats and deficits related to these facilities.
4. Design facilities in a manner that the facilities themselves will be in harmony with society and the environment.
5. Analyse methods of improving energy efficiency at wastewater treatment facilities
6. Analyse and calculate energy production from waste
7. Individually design components in detail.
8. Analyse existing wastewater and waste treatment facilities and explain the benefits to the engineering community and the public.
9. Understand the engineers responsibility to the public and environment when designing and operating such facilities
