This course consists of an introduction to the theory of fluid mechanics. Topics covered include: a review of vector calculus and differential operators, ideal fluids, Bernoulli's equation, irrotational flow, stream functions, potential theory, the Navier-Stokes equations, elementary viscous flow with examples, very viscous flows.
Learning Outcomes 1. become familiar with vector calculus, index notation, differential operators; 2. mathematically model the behaviour of an ideal fluid; 3. superpose elementary stream solutions to construct the solution of a flow past an obstacle; 4. understand the assumptions made in deriving the Navier-Stokes equations for fluid motion; 5. construct some analytical solutions for some elementary viscous fluid flows.
