DESCRIPTION
Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the structure of polymers and how the structure of a polymer affects mechanical performance. 2. Identification of stress-strain response and description of the effects of strain-rate and temperature on the viscoelastic behaviour of polymers. Application of this knowledge to engineering design situations. 3. Develop mathematical models for viscoelastic behaviour in situations of static loading of stress or strain, as well as modelling arbitrary histories of stress and strain. 4. Discuss the primary strengthening and deformation mechanisms in polymeric materials and predict failure under static and dynamic loading using linear elastic fracture mechanics. 5. Understand polymer manufacturing processes and the key factors which affect polymer processing. 6. Identify viscoelastic flow properties of polymer materials 7. Introduction to composite materials and determination of mechanical properties of fibre reinforced composite materials. 8. Conduct tensile and fatigue experiments under varying strain-rates and carry out creep tests on polymeric materials to investigate the effect of loading conditions on material performance.
