The aim of the course is to combine knowledge from the fields of political science, sociology, and urban studies in order to give students a detailed insight into Czech politics at both national and local levels. At the end of the course, they 1) will have a basic introduction to the Czech political system and its institutions; 2) will be able to understand how politics functions in Czech cities, with a focus on urban governance and local decision-making; and 3) will have specific knowledge of Prague as a case study in contemporary political challenges, such as urban planning, housing policy, and over-tourism.
Students' presentations will focus on comparing Czech national and urban politics with the political realities of their home countries. Movies and documents as well as few walks will be part of the lectures. The main output of the course is a final paper, which will be discussed during the semester and gradually presented by the students in the form of short reports on their projects.
