DESCRIPTION

This course examines the social impacts of artificial intelligence, analysing how AI transforms social structures, institutional practices, and patterns of human behaviour. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the impact of AI specifically on familial and marital relations, educational systems, class structure, cultural norms, and the dynamics of social media. It will also evaluate the evolving social psychology of human - AI relationships, particularly the influence of these interactions on our capacity to connect with one another.

The course is designed to create an experiential learning environment, where students will not only study AI conceptually, but will actively engage with it through interaction, observation, and critical reflection. It goes beyond a narrow focus on large language models (LLMs) and prompting techniques. Instead, it examines AI as a broader sociotechnical phenomenon embedded in everyday life. The aim of this course is not to replace thinking with AI, but to strengthen student's ability to think critically about and with AI and learn to engage responsibly in a rapidly changing socio-technical environment. Through a combination of case studies, debates, simulations, and applied analysis, student's will explore the challenges associated with increasingly widespread AI adoption, including issues of trust, accountability, and societal well-being.
