DESCRIPTION
This course covers a wide range of communications professions, focusing on current major themes in both the United States and the United Kingdom but also looking at topics from a global perspective. Specifically, this deep dive into mass media offers ample opportunities to compare and contrast US, UK, and international systems. Understanding the methods, content, context and how other countries communicate with their population will help provide you with a clearer definition of American's place and perception in the Global community.
This course includes an overnight stay at Cardiff, Wales, hosted by the preeminent Welsh advertising agency, Golley Slater. While in Cardiff, you will have the opportunity interact with students from the University of Wales in a joint workshop at Golley Slater. This course also includes a day trip to Cambridge (or Oxford) University, learning from professionals and/or noted scholars. Visits and lectures from industry professionals vary each year, but are drawn from: BBC, ITV, Independent Radio, London newspapers, leading advertising agencies, media specialists, the British Parliament, Oxford or Cambridge University, Internet specialists, film, live television, music and radio amongst many others.
Additionally, this course includes a series of specially selected, high level professional guest lecturers, often in their place of work. Guest Lecturers will give a personal explanation of their area of expertise and will also share their view of the future to help prepare you for things to come. These lectures are not one-way monologues, but rather an interactive, unprecedented opportunity to learn and ask question of professionals. The Guest Lecturers will vary across all areas of mass media, so you will have the opportunity to learn about adjacent fields of communication.
