Operations Management (OM) is concerned with the management of resources and activities that produce and deliver goods and services for customers. Efficient and effective operations can provide an organization with major competitive advantages since the ability to respond to customer and market requirements quickly, at a low cost, and with high quality, is vital to attaining profitability and growth through increased market share.

This 1-credit course is assignment-based, using Microsoft's Excel software, and is intended to complement the 3-credit Basic Operations Management course (BUS334 / MIS334). More specifically, it consists of weekly, one-hour laboratory sessions in which students develop their skills in the application of Excel in order to resolve Operational Research problems. Emphasis will therefore be placed on the practical implementation of real world models, building on competencies acquired in the 3-credit BOM course. The laboratory sessions are informal and students are expected to contribute in a positive manner.

Research conducted by the National Teaching Laboratory (USA) on the effectiveness of different teaching methods revealed that fact-retention as a result of listening to a lecture is approximately 5%, retention from reading is about 10%, while the use of facts and practical applications for the purpose of presentations increases the level of retention in the region of 90%. Hence, during this course, all students will engage in practical exercises and prepare PowerPoint presentations relevant to the assigned readings and videos which will be delivered in turns at the start of each class.

In conformity with CEA policy, all students are expected to spend at least two hours of time on academic studies outside of, and in addition to, each hour of class time. In this time, students are expected to read the assigned material and view selected videos on the use of Excel in preparation for each laboratory session.

*This course is cross-listed with BUS329DUB
