DESCRIPTION
This course challenges the notion of Spain as a unified national entity, focusing instead on the historical dynamics of inclusion and exclusion: who belongs, under what conditions, and at what cost. Students will examine legal frameworks (citizenship laws, purity of blood statutes, autonomy agreements), cultural mechanisms (language, religion, collective memory), and political movements (nationalism, empire, migration policy) that have shaped Spanish identities across centuries. Special attention is given to resistance by religious minorities, regional nationalisms, migrants, and cultural communities against forced assimilation and homogenization. The course also explores contemporary developments, including the rise of populist and far-right ideologies, as part of Spain's ongoing struggle with pluralism. Combining historical analysis with current debates, students will gain a nuanced understanding of Spain as a dynamic, diverse society where tensions around belonging remain unresolved.
