DESCRIPTION

European cinema has long served as a reference point for artistic innovation and for the exploration of social, political, and philosophical concerns. This course examines the historical development of European cinema through its major film movements, placing them in dialogue with - and in contrast to - the American film industry and its commercial model. The course combines historical, theoretical, and aesthetic perspectives to analyze the evolution of cinematic form and language.

The course is divided into two sections. The first section adopts a seminar format focused on historical context, film theory, and stylistic analysis. The second section emphasizes practical engagement through film screenings, close readings, and critical discussions of key works and filmmakers, from Soviet montage cinema of the 1920s to British social realism of the 2010s.

Students develop a solid understanding of film structure and formalism while critically examining the reciprocal relationship between cinema, society, and cultural identity across European history.
