DESCRIPTION

This course offers an exploration of how infectious diseases have shaped the urban landscape of one of Europe's most iconic cities. Barcelona, with its rich history and vibrant culture, provides a fascinating case study for understanding the interplay between disease and urbanization. From the devastating Black Death in the 14th century to the cholera outbreaks of the 19th century, and the more recent COVID-19 pandemic, each event has left an indelible mark on the city's structure and society. Through a combination of lectures, interactive discussions, and site visits, students will gain insights into the historical context of these health crises and their lasting impacts. By the end of this course, students will not only understand the historical relationship between infectious diseases and urban planning but also appreciate the lessons these past events offer for contemporary public health challenges.
