DESCRIPTION
This course invites students to research and reflect on their experiences in Italy by developing their own choreographic work. Through guided studio practice, students will explore how personal narratives can intersect with broader cultural contexts, transforming lived experience into movement-based inquiry. They will be encouraged to experiment with relationships between the body and concepts such as the public sphere, urban space, and contemporary social issues, considering how choreography can engage with and respond to its surroundings.
Students will also have the opportunity to investigate multiple performance formats - site-specific, participatory, improvisational, and staged - broadening their understanding of how movement can function as a tool for communication and cultural expression. Studio work will be supported by readings and discussions that introduce key ideas in cultural production, performance studies, and the politics of space, offering additional frameworks to deepen their creative research.
By the end of the course, students will have developed a small portfolio of choreographic explorations informed by both embodied practice and critical reflection.
