ARTH 3102 Italian Architecture: Romanesque to Gothic Studio Art & Fashion Design Program 2019/2020 Year SRISA Only - Florence

This course aims to give students a thorough knowledge of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Italy. They will examine the most significant examples of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in Europe, as well as in different Italian regions, with a particular focus on Tuscany and the cities of Pisa, Lucca, Pistoia, Siena and Florence. Romanesque and Gothic architecture will be seen in relation to developments of European society and to contemporary social, political, cultural and religious backgrounds. Visits to the most relevant monuments of the Romanesque and Gothic ages in Florence will constitute an integral part of the course. Special attention will be given to the work of the architect and sculptor Arnolfo di Cambio as well as artists such as Cimabue, Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Giotto, Duccio di Boninsegna, Simone Martini, Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti in relation to its original location.
