DESCRIPTION

Being a ruler or powerful political figure was a dangerous life in the ancient Mediterranean. They were at risk of becoming victims of political machinations, professional jealousies, or civil disruptions, sometimes with fatal results. We will analyze several cases of conspiracies and successful assassinations from Mesopotamia, Greece, and the Roman Empire to answer the following questions: what do these events tell us about what different communities considered a “good” or “bad” leader? How did these events disrupt politics and society? What were the differing attitudes towards the death of rulers? And, finally, what were the measures those in power took to prevent themselves from being violently ousted?
