Prerequisites: A thorough knowledge of Akkadian (Babylonian/Assyrian) grammar, vocabulary and cuneiform signs (Neo-Assyrian monumental script), equivalent to at least one full year of study is obligatory. Students should have followed Elementary Akkadian 1-2 and ideally one additional Akkadian reading course at the VU or elsewhere. In case of doubts about qualifications acquired outside the VU, please contact the course coordinator.

DESCRIPTION

In this course students with a thorough basic knowledge of Akkadian (equivalent of Elementary Akkadian 1 & 2) will continue to grapple with the intricacies of the Babylonian and Assyrian languages and the cuneiform writing system. They will master the fundamentals of phonology, morphology and grammar and be introduced to the Standard Babylonian literary dialect, which developed from Old Babylonian.
