DESCRIPTION

Similar to many European countries, France has undergone profound demographic changes, in particular since the end of WWII. These changes have affected the image France has of itself, and raise questions about how the Republic is viewed by the population, as well as how the concept of nation can be defined.

This course is designed for students who have only basic knowledge of the principles of the French Republic. The course is in English, and will explain the historical context of French Republicanism and the importance of republican law in French society. The history of immigration will be studied in the context of colonialism, but also in relation to France?s geographical location and its industrial past. The demographic evolution of the city of Grenoble will be studied as an example to illustrate how different waves of populations have influenced the urban structure of the city.
The reality of multiculturalism and integration, and the tensions within contemporary French society will be examined through different documents in both English and French : video (fiction and non-fiction), audio, international press etc. Students will be expected to present one theme from the course in class (in groups) and to lead a discussion on the topic. Each lesson will involve group work on the different documents provided.
