DESCRIPTION
This course provides an overview of the history of costume and fashion from antiquity up to the present with an emphasis on the period 1850-present. It also takes into account key theories of fashion.
Special attention will be paid to costumes worn at the courts of early modern Europe and its meaning and functioning, while an analysis of fashion in the 20th and 21st centuries allows us to highlight the phenomenon of fashion in relation to its social context.
Our approach emphatically aims to become international. While the focus still lies on the Western world, this is consciously problematized and put into perspective by means of several case studies.
