DESCRIPTION

This course introduces and examines some key features and issues of Hungarian culture and society through readings of literary and scholarly works, lectures, and screening of films. These features and issues - where appropriate - are put into European perspective. The most important supranational European institutes (EU, CoE, OSCE) shaping the life of European people are also introduced.

The overall objective is to introduce international exchange students to the milieu, background, and current debates surrounding the lives of individuals in Hungary and the broader geographical region. By acquiring information and knowledge on various topics concerning culture and social issues students will be better equipped to shape their own understanding of what they personally experience during their stay in Hungary.
The personal real-life experiences of the students gained by living in Hungary incorporated into the course by enhanced classroom discussions.

A special aim of this course is to provide a wider and more profound understanding of Hungarian culture and society by offering information and frameworks on cultural and social issues for comparing them with similar phenomena that exist in students' respective home countries.

Corvinus University of Budapest awards credits based on the ECTS system (2 ECTS credits equals 1 U.S. credit therefore, 6 ECTS credits is equivalent to 3 U.S. credits). At Corvinus University of Budapest, all classes meet for a minimum of 180 minutes per week. Contact hours are calculated through a combination of lecture hours and outside activities which can include (workshops, seminars, fieldwork activities, guest lectures, and independent work) therefore, contact hours may vary on syllabi.
