DESCRIPTION
This course examines pop culture media like anime, manga, film, and video games as psychological texts. Drawing on psychodynamic, developmental, personality, trauma, and media psychology, students learn to analyze pop culture as symbolic material expressing unconscious conflicts, relational dynamics, and cultural fantasies. Rather than diagnosing fictional characters, the course teaches students to identify psychological structures, defensive patterns, and modes of subjectivity as they emerge in narrative form in pop culture media. Full-series viewing is not required. Required materials will be provided as short excerpts/clips in class or via e-learning; additional viewing is optional for the paper/presentation.
