DESCRIPTION

The course helps students to understand multiple ways how (international) politics and religion interact as well as the manifold nexus between politics and ethnicity. Both, politization of ethnic identities and plethora of religious phenomena is discussed in transdisciplinary perspectives and in particular contexts of many specific cases. Seminar debates cover topics such identity politics and multiculturalism debates; nexus of religion, political ideologies, and parties/movements; secularism and Church-State relations; governance of religious/ethnic diversity, the reflection of ethnicity and religion in the so called "Culture Wars" related to political "tribalism" and polarization; fundamentalism, radicalism and (de)radicalization; relation of religion to both violence and reconciliation; ethnic conflicts - and more, including related individual research projects chosen and prepared by students in cooperation with the lecturer. The introductory lectures and the key readings uncover diversity of conceptualizations and various manifestations of both ethnicity and religion in relation to the concepts of culture, identity, nationalism as well as racial and gender identity.
