World Economic History (19th and 20th Centuries) Science & Engineering Program Fall 2023 Semester - Alicante

Economic History is a training course that also provides an additional and necessary dimension to the lessons that the future economist receives, such as: the long-term vision, the emphasis on processes of technological change and structural change, and the consideration of all those institutional, political and social aspects that condition the changing and evolutionary structure of the economy. The long-term study of economic evolution should allow the future economist to acquire the historical perspective of the differences that persist today in per capita incomes between countries and thus reflect on the causes of growth and development. The importance of the subject lies in the fact that our conception of what happened determines our way of seeing the present. Economic History is a bridge between History and Economy; and the collaboration between these two disciplines is especially fruitful and enriching as each one contributes its own theoretical and methodological conception. Therefore, given the nature of this subject, it is interrelated with the rest of the Departments that teach in the Economics Degree.
