Required Supplies: You must bring a 35mm DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera to Buenos Aires. Your camera must have a manual mode and a 50mm or 35mm lens (or a zoom including the 50mm focal length). Additionally, your camera must have a minimum of 8 mega pixels. You must also bring a USB key and a computer for classroom sessions. Basic Photoshop or iPhoto software will be needed.

DESCRIPTION

Learn how the camera can be used in a foreign environment as an exciting tool for cross-cultural understanding, artistic expression, and self-discovery. After an introduction to the fundamentals of film and digital photography, your camera will be trained on the city of Buenos Aires and the personal experiences absorbed here, including the architecture, history, people, and rich culture. As you develop your technical, compositional, and critical skills, you will create a portfolio of images that will both showcase and celebrate your unforgettable study abroad experience.

In-class workshops will develop your theoretical and practical skills as a photographer. Outside the classroom, you'll venture on photographic journeys throughout the streets and squares of the city center in guided visits to various photo exhibitions.

Class time will consist of technical work, slide lectures, short film screenings, and critiques of work in progress. Some class sessions will also be dedicated to outside shooting at specific sites, including a visit to a local museum. During the course, your instructor will deliver critical reviews of your work, but you will also be actively involved in analyzing and evaluating your own work and the work of peers in a collaborative atmosphere of constructive reflection and criticism.
