DESCRIPTION

This course offers an exploration of Mediterranean cultural traditions (UNESCO intangible cultural heritage). These traditions include different elements like social practices, rituals, festive events, and knowledge systems that exist throughout the Mediterranean. These elements were passed from one generation to another via oral traditions and they represent the Mediterranean cultural identity. The course will examine traditions with cross-cultural connections, shared by multiple countries, such as the Mediterranean Diet and Henna rituals. The course also covers performing arts like Flamenco (Spain) and Gnawa Music (Algeria), traditional arts and crafts such as Aveiro Ceramics (Portugal) and Al-Ayyata (Egypt), and rituals and social practices such as Greek Orthodox Festivals and Moroccan Moussem Festivals. The role of language using examples like Provençal Occitan (France) and social customs in Turkish Coffee Culture (Turkey).
