Major social, economic, political, and diplomatic developments in European history from 1870 to 1918.
This course will examine the major social, economic, political and diplomatic developments in European history. It will concentrate primarily on the historical experience of France, Germany, the Ottoman Empire and Russia, with occasional attention paid to other European nations. Four particular themes will be explored:
1. The idea of nation and the emergence of nationalism.
2. European politics, from Anarchism to Marxism.
3. Cultural history: the evolution of European Arts.
4. The Consequences of the wars on the European perception of History.
