DESCRIPTION

Resulting of the fusion of Afro-Rioplatense, gaucho and European dances and rhythms, tango was born in the mid-19th century on the outskirts of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, undergoing a transformation that made it a recognized global and transnational musical genre in the last decade of the 19th century. This course focuses on tango as tradition and rupture in Argentine culture. From the margins of the suburbs and the periphery to the centrality of an international dance, tango is the best cultural artifact to think about Argentine society. During the classes we will analyze socio-cultural aspects of tango, the beginnings and evolution of the genre, the relationship between tango culture and the development of the city of Buenos Aires, as well as review the outstanding discography of the different periods of the genre and experience tango in the body with choreographic movements.

The University of Belgrano utilizes a 45-minute contact hour whereas the United States higher education system utilizes a 50-minute contact hour. All University of Belgrano courses represent the 45 contact hour amount and an estimated US credit calculation based on the contact hours. Each University of Belgrano transcript will include the number of hours per week and the weeks in the semester, so US universities may calculate the appropriate number of US credits for students.
