DESCRIPTION

This course introduces the scientific foundations of human nutrition with a focus on applications in nursing and health care practice. Core topics include the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of nutrients, as well as the roles of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals in maintaining health across the lifespan. The course examines how nutrition influences growth, physical performance, and the prevention and management of chronic diseases common in clinical settings.

Class sessions combine lectures, case discussions, and applied projects. Students interpret current dietary guidelines, evaluate nutrition-related policies, and practice translating scientific evidence into patient-centered recommendations. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and the integration of nutrition knowledge into nursing care and health promotion strategies. By the end of the semester, students are prepared to apply nutrition principles in clinical decision-making and patient education.
