DESCRIPTION
This course explores Spanish society, past and present, through its media and popular culture, including television, journalism, advertising, music, film, and social media. Students examine how audiovisual and creative productions reflect historical and contemporary cultural dynamics, social trends, and everyday experiences in Spain.
Organized into six thematic units, the course introduces students to current and historical media models and popular culture widely consumed in Spain. Through screenings, readings, discussions, and experiential activities, students analyze media content, consider the historical and social context behind it, and reflect on how media shapes perceptions of Spanish society across time.
By the end of the course, students are able to interpret audiovisual and popular culture artifacts as tools for understanding both historical and contemporary Spanish culture, its values, trends, and complexities, gaining insight into the ways cultural expression informs and reflects society across different periods.
