DESCRIPTION

The global scale of internationalisation means that political, economic and social dimensions are challenged by market expansion and technological advancement. Businesses are tied to multiple dimensions of cultural and ethical standards that increase uncertainty and initiate rapid and unexpected changes in business practices. This course is designed to introduce you to the different political and socioeconomic realities of the American continent.

This course will help you understand how to adjust to cultural differences when planning and conducting business in the various countries of North, Central and South America, drawing on the interdisciplinary fields of culture and business. During our classes, you will learn about analytical means and suitable communication practices applied to international business carried out in the various countries of the Americas. As such, you will also gain a better understanding of how cultural dimensions (Hofstede and Hall) effect negotiations and business success. By using socioeconomic analysis and learning about the differences in people?s values and customs, you will gain a better understanding of the different views, motivations, practices and protocols in the business reality of American countries. Aided by theoretical knowledge and by means of group exercises, discussions, case studies (and possibly guest speakers), you will also be exposed to the practical aspects of doing business in the Americas. You will increase your knowledge of local economics (prominent economic sectors, consumer expectations and major multinational companies in the area), relevant economic barriers (trade laws and regulation, international and regional trade agreements and organisations) and learn about actual managerial practices including hands-on knowledge of constructive communication practices used in a cross-cultural context.

By the end of the course, you should be able to develop a suitable mix of traditional and new forms of communication in order to successfully work with clients, purchasing partners and employees in the Americas. Alongside obtaining a critical view on business practices and gaining higher empathy regarding various American cultures, you should be able to gain a high level of expertise about how to conduct business efficiently in these countries. Overall, the course is designed to help you cope successfully with strategic decision-making processes when negotiating and working with countries on the American continent.
