Cultural Visions through Argentine & Latin American Cinema International Business Program Spring 2023 Semester - Early Start - Buenos Aires

This course has two goals: to provide you with the tools and Spanish vocabulary you need in order to analyze a film and to use these tools to analyze fifteen contemporary films from Argentina and Latin America. Through a broad selection of relevant film shorts and feature-length films, you will see and experience through the big screen many of the cultural representations that you encounter in everyday life. Through the analysis of these representations, you will strengthen your skills as a viewer, intercultural competence and deepen your understanding of the social and cultural realities of your new surroundings.

The films are organized in four thematic units: 1. Nuevo Cine Argentino. 2. Rethinking Dictatorship. 3. Lingering Magical Realism. 4. Post-National Contemporary Film in Latin America. The units are organized so as to provide you with a wide range of themes, genres and perspectives of some of Latin America's most important contemporary filmmakers. By watching and analyzing these films, you will have the opportunity to develop your linguistic and intercultural skills as you learn about Latin American society through cinema. Film provides a privileged view of cultural differences and linguistic nuances that will aid you in your other courses at the CEA Study Abroad Center besides assisting you in the many intercultural discoveries you will make while living and studying abroad.
