DESCRIPTION

In this course, we study the relationships between science, technology, and society. The first part of the course is dedicated to contemporary and future technological developments and their ethical, societal implications. Based on real-life examples, we disentangle the complexities of science and technology in our modern society. We look at the scientific system, rules and regulations and evaluation of science and technology. This part of the course will be completed with an exam at the end of week 2.

During the second part of the course, insights gained during the first part will be used in a group research project. Guided by BS&S coaches, students execute a desk study and work on a specific case in the context of biomedical sciences. The project results in a report and a presentation during the final week of the course.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) awards credits based on the ECTS system. Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
