DESCRIPTION
This course explores the history of women in modern Italy examining how women's roles, bodies, labor, and rights have been shaped by religion, family structures, political regimes, economic systems, and cultural representation. Rather than offering a simple chronological overview, the course examines several focal points (such as the image of women in the arts and in literature; the control on female bodies; women and work in the Italian economy; the development of civil rights through history with voting rights, divorce and family laws) to reflect on future perspectives. Through lectures, film screenings, site visits, and discussion, students will analyze continuities and ruptures from premodern Italy to the present day, with particular attention to gender, power, identity, and citizenship.
