DESCRIPTION
The course presents an overview of the history and culture of Prague from the early medieval period to the present through its art, literature, and cultural memory. Prague, a city shaped by successive historical periods and artistic traditions, provides a unique setting in which to explore the relationship between visual culture, history, literature, and collective memory. We will study Romanesque and Gothic art, Renaissance and Baroque art, nineteenth-century art, Art Nouveau, Modern art, and contemporary art, while considering the historical and cultural narratives associated with them.
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: - Identify major art-historical periods and styles of art and architecture and recognize their defining characteristics. - Identify and contextualize important examples of art and cultural heritage in Prague in relation to their historical, literary, and cultural contexts. - Discuss how art, literature, and cultural memory contribute to the historical identity of Prague. - Prepare and present research on a chosen topic.
*Please note: This course is predominantly taken by CEA CAPA students.
