- To enable students to obtain an understanding of the rules relating to civil rights;
- To encourage students to critically analyse and evaluate the domestic framework for the protection of civil rights;
- To explore the philosophical and policy issues involved;
- To examine the practical problems of enforcing civil rights;
- To encourage an appreciation of the wider social, economic and political context within which the law operates;
- To develop the skills required for independent research, analysis of complex legal problems.
