DESCRIPTION
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the historiography of media, art, design and architecture while tracing its development from the early modern period to the present day. In the lectures and working groups, we will examine a range of historiographic approaches that have shaped the ways in which these disciplines have been conceived and perceived while exploring their theoretical foundations and methodological practices. Focusing on the work of prominent historians, theorists, and authors, we will discuss how the historicization of media, art, design, and architecture was defined, as well as counter perspectives that critically analyse the existing discourse. We will engage in critical discussions, close readings, and analytical exercises to deepen our understanding of how the development of these disciplines has been studied and interpreted over time.
Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
